Hey-I just realized that when I watched this clip before it-stopped at the birthing position segment! I never saw the rest of it til today-the whole thing played-the footage of the Bal Anat is wonderful! This is Belly Dancing! Little Suhaila balancing the tray-when I was little Johanna and I did firepot balancing in Black Sea "Laz". Loved Aida's dancing! Glad I looked again.

My mother was a drummer the whole nine yards. I can relate to this kind of show-ethnic diverse-belly dancing is a "folk dance"-we forget that today.

what a treat to see this. My first teacher, my sister Fatima, danced with Jamilla in the 1970's and then taught me. I was so impressed I have been totally in love with belly dance ever since. Thank-you!

Found the footage on Jamila very interesting! Thank you. I Remember when my mother was dancing and I started-and Jamila was on the West Coast, etc.-belly dance had so much more technique and complexities of movements. Now there is just too much harsh bumping and isolating-like entire act is one too long drum solo-and the footwork is lacking or non-existant. They tend to call this the "Modern Egyptian" style, but actually is somewhat misleading, as even the Egyptian movie stars in classic cinema had more traditional floor patterns, footwork. Depended on the situation in the script. (Remember that the scene where Naima Akef is dancing outside with two long braids in Tamra Henna, I think, this is really essentially what we were doing in Greektown, NYC. We were "folk dancers.")

Also, today's dancers think that you did not see Zil playing in Egyptian movies it meant Arabic people don't play them. This is so wrong!
Moviemakers didn't always use because you had to go back and "synch" the tracks. All of our movies in the old days-our tap dancers had to repeat their performance in a recording studio so the sound of their taps could be synched. Same with Zil. Sometimes they just didn't fool with it for that reason.

So many in business now just a bunch of dummies-not all-but a lot! Stubborn and insulting to the great ladies who used to know history of dance.

Thanks for sharing this about Salimpour. I've tried to impress upon people now that the complexities and knowledge of the music and dance origin has been completely snuffed out and re-written by too many "cliques."

Time for a "revolution." A back to the "basics."

It was also great to see the gal in the striped harem pants in this vintage footage. Stripes are so "Old World Oriental." God, I loved seeing that!

Very interesting article from Morocco - but it still is puzzling to me that it should be so disgusting the idea that the dance represents the sexual act too. I mean - we are made of sex, conception and birth would not exist without it. I agree that the 'stripper' side of this dance that has developed is gross - but that is mainly because of the wests perverted idea of sex and the sex industry would not exist if there was not this guilt and embarassment about sexuality. Its all fascinating stuff.

Was/is her husband Oriental? Sounds like it to me. ; )
If you want to know more about how bellydance technique relates to childbirth, read that famous article on Morocco's homepage (the dancer, not the country) , I think, it is www.casbah.org , something like that. Anyway, you can google her, she has a lot of interesting stuff in there.

i heard, it was an interview with Suhalia that i can't find anywhere (anyone seen it?) that when Jamila married her husband he forbid her to ever set foot in a night club again. that if she kept performing dance he would break her legs, so she started teaching as a way around it......

Wow, really interesting stuff!!! I'd heard about the childbirth thing, but not that it copied the movements of the body, but had heard it was to prepare the body for childbirth. However the idea that the movements are copying those of the womans body in childbirth make alot of sense. Fascinating stuff....

I found this recently - women who are into the natural birth and talking about ecstatic birthing etc and that they find their bodies wanting to do spiraling movements to help move the energy of the contractions down the body and out... She talks about the spiraling.

Actually, I heard from Hadia that in those early days of bellydance in California everybody who did not take lessons with Jamila Salimpour was not considered a proper bellydancer. Typical, maybe (tribalism and all that) and maybe they had a point?
