This is Alba Hayal from Spain. She really has fabulously tight turns and manages to fuse the real flamenco feel into the oriental piece. It is the first time I see Msafer danced in a way that really answers its Spanish flair! youtube.com/watch

Wed, May 7, 2008 - 11:29 AMHave you seen Asi's version? www.youtube.com/watch
Alba is a little too smiley peppy for me (for the song)... -

Re: Great Msafer interpretation
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 12:03 PMActually I think you have to consider the settings and the situation before holding one interprete against another. Alba is dancing in a different setting, at Ahlan wa Sahlan where there's one dancer coming out after another, each from a different nation, to the well known instrumental version, with her compatriotas cheering at her feet, so she will smile. Asi, on a stage like in a theatre, evening feel, with a singer (!), is all about interpretation. His taqasim is sooo beautiful. but his turns always have something a little stiff. -

Re: Great Msafer interpretation
Wed, May 7, 2008 - 8:22 PMAbsolutely! The venue has a HUGE impact on a dancer's ability to interpret the music.

Re: Great Msafer interpretation
Wed, May 14, 2008 - 4:25 AMFunny. I like her way better than Munique. But you can't judge a dancer from a few clips, really.

Fri, May 9, 2008 - 7:06 PMLove Mira! Thanks for posting. It's always so interesting to see how different dancers interpret the same music.
I love her shimmied belly pops, so pretty! -

Re: Great Msafer interpretation
Fri, May 9, 2008 - 9:02 PMLoved Alba's performance. She did a GREAT job! Note to self: when foot heals, study FLAMENCO! I'll have to check out the other links as well.
Msafer is one of my fave songs to dance to. I usually play zills with it... sorta castinet-like.... to enhance the Spanish flavor of the song. I love this piece!
Thanks for starting this thread!

Re: Great Msafer interpretation
Mon, May 19, 2008 - 3:14 AMI agree, Nila. Fadda mimicks flamenco but can't transport the feel there is to it. She is a very elegant dancer nevertheless, a lot of ballet training.
