Hi Astrid,

Glad I was able to help. Yes, you do initiate the movement with your legs. It can be done with out putting your arms down on the ground (was going over this last night to think about how to explain it) . You can start by sitting on your knees, then carefully moving over on to your hip, so you're sitting sort of like a mermaid, then you roll your legs to the other side, your torso will slowly move as well, but it does not initiate the movement. Then you end up sitting mermaid-style again, but your knees and torso end facing the opposite direction. Then you sit back up on your knees again, and repeat the sequence. I think a good drill is to practice from sitting on your knees and smoothly getting into that mermaid-position. Then the more advanced variation of this is having your legs extending, and this case you do need to use your hands for support. But the rolling is initiated by the hips and legs, not the torso, it's just along for the ride.

These moves used to be really common 60s, 70s and early 80s. They come out of the "old-school" American Cabaret style. For whatever reason, a lot of these movements went out of fashion for a while. Rachel Brice and some of the tribal/fusion dancers have been making it more popular again. But what's funny is they're recycling these old moves, and people are all really impressed because they've never seen this before. I'm pretty familiar with them because one of my teachers, Severina, was trained by Ansuya and Anaheed who still perform "old-school" floorwork. Actually, Anaheed has a really good video Classic Cabaret Floorwork which would be helpful, or possibly Delilah's Workshop vol 3, which I think someone on the CD/DVD tribe has for sale. You could adapt some of the moves for your tray dance.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WTmRa2QediY&feature=related

Also Tanna's video Floorwork for Body Shaping might have some useful info on it. I used to have this video, but lost it. It's a cheaper alternative to the other two videos.

Thank you so much, Emily. Nobody on the drill and choreo tribe is answering my question. = ( = ( Is this such a rare dance?
So I really appreciate you helping me out here. After reading your comment I remembered what I did the first time I figured out how to do this and lost it again: you start the movement of rolling your body from the feet and legs instead of the shoulders in this case, right?
It took me a while to come up with this, because pivoting in tango while standing up works exactly the opposite way and this is what I am used to. But then I forgot this again, and your comment helped me remember.
Yes, I noticed that too, that the sword balancing technique is almost the same except that (as a tribal dancer at least) you can bury a sword in the groove inside your turban but with a tray you can't cheat, unless you place a ring on your head like an Oriental water carrier with a clay pot. So, I found and added this video to my list for further reference because it contains many of the basic moves.

If anybody has more on the rolling on the floor bit and other floor moves, I'd appreciate it.

One other potentially random comment, I've never danced with a tray. But with a sword most people put candle wax or some thing on the balance point to create a little friction so that it doesn't slip as much. It can make a big difference especially when turning. And for trays, I'm sure it's going to be critical that the objects on the tray are evenly distributed so you have a good balance point.

Hi Astrid,

The clips of Djamila and Irina are very nice. In addition to looking at tray clips, you can look at sword clips for inspiration as well. It's the same principal, just balancing different objects.

I saw on the the drills and choreography tribe that you're looking for advice on turning over with the tray on your head. I'm posting this clip of Romka. Around 2:40, they start doing the turns I think you were asking about. I think the key is to keep the upper body and torso still as possible, the legs and hips are sort of moving around the torso. Go slowly, take your time. In terms of turning your head, slow have your head facing the direction you're turning. You can rest various points along the circle, I think it's really nice if you stop when you're facing the audience, in a sort of cobra pose.. I don't know if that's helpful, not sure how well I'm explaining it. It's definitely a practice thing. Good luck.
