Re: My latest: Turkish Greek Karsilama
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 12:20 PMHi Michele-glad you liked it-thank you very much!
I have one other dance clip up from January-Slow Cifte Telli. On the Karsilama, it was dark for effect like being around a campire-that "spirit" so to speak. When I went to put it on "youtube" it actually came out darker than it did when I shot it. However, I just found out that if someone presses the "HQ" button on the bottom of the "TV" viewer/player on youtube it makes it more effective. I think I'll make a note on the side with the info.
I learned Karsilama and "zil" from my Mom and the Turkish dance stars that were in NYC back when I started. My mother was influenced strongly by Ozel Turkbas whom she worked with her on her first gig in bellydance. What I do is the real old "traditional" Karsilama and is rare these days.
Michele, I love the state of Pennsylvania, by the way! I bellydanced in Allentown many years ago and I also love the Poconos, etc. My Uncle Russell, a non-denominational minister from Crab Orchard, WV, was a "conscientous objector" during World War II but was able to serve his country doing office work near Hershey, PA. He loved the area so much he always took his wife back there on vacation! -

Re: My latest: Turkish Greek Karsilama
Tue, June 30, 2009 - 3:05 PMHi! I am new to Pennsylvania myself. It can be a beautiful place! I just love all the exploring I'm doing with my boyfriend (how high school is that! giggle!)
I am kind of an on again/off again novice to dancing. I've had some lessons way back when I was young and free. Than I became a single mom so there wasn't a lot of extra time or money. Several dance friends have encouraged me to take it up again. They tell me I have good basics. But finding a teacher close to Dover has been a challenge. But I'm not giving up!
Do you teach? Or are you more on the student side? My friend Devra Johari said once that even though she taught she would always be a student as well. Because there are so many wonderful teachers out there willing to share their knowledge. I have always thought that was a great statement.
Well, I need to get off and get dinner on the table!
safe journeys to you and again "Thank You" for inviting me into your circle!

Re: My latest: Turkish Greek Karsilama
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 3:57 PMHi Michele,
I am a forty year veteran of professional belly dancing-started at age one-born into it-came out kicking screaming and dancing-ha ha!
My Mom Johanna was one of the biggest stars in Greektown in NYC for almost twenty years. We have taught on and off when we had the time. I have been playing "zil" since age two. Part of my Middle Eastern heritage. Love it! Wouldn't give it up for the world!
I have a myspace page with a full bio and galleries.

You are near Harrisburg and York. If you and your friends are ever interested in special workshops with me send me a message.
My mother raised me alone! That is a tough job, let me tell you! I understand about single parenthood firsthand. My mother and I left NY in 1982 so she could recuperate from falling ill with Narcolepsy. She had to work so hard. It took a toll. She is 81 now and lives with me. -

Re: My latest: Turkish Greek Karsilama
Wed, July 1, 2009 - 8:14 PMWOW!!! I come from an Irish/Italian/Polish background and my parents didn't want us to be anything but "American". I guess that's why I feel like a chamelion (sp?). Always having to blend in so to speak.
But dancing was the one thing I have always felt was mine. And when I found "Belly dancing" it was like "OMG!" that's so beautiful! And I got it right away. Back in my twenties I took six lessons at the "Y" and in never having danced before my teacher asked me to come back for her intermediate class. I wanted to so bad. But life stepped in. It was almost 20 years before I found "belly dancing" again. I just happened to see an advertisement for a show with dinner in a downtown restaurant. I convinced a friend to go with me and we became regulars. The Mistress of Ceremonies became a wonderful friend. And between her and her husband (who played the drum for her) I started dancing again. Now I'm retired after 30 years with the state of Maryland, moved to Penn. to live with my fiance and his mother, and I'm looking for a new teacher here. It's a little ruff as there are teachers here but most are more than 40 miles away and at night after caring for Mom all day is just a little tiring. But I have hope to find someone a little closer.
OOO! And the nearest restaurant that has dancers is in Harrisburg, it's only 25 miles from here but so far we just haven't been able to get a free weekend to go. <sigh!> But again I have big hopes! <smile!>
I'll check out your myspace page soon!
